Flying kites...The charm of old city!

Last two days I was busy teaching my children about the fundamentals of flying kites!

I was enjoying making them to learn the typical lingo…we Hyderabadi’s use,
Especially the old city clan, with reference to Patang… (Kite)

The varieties…gudlendaar, doklam, zebra…etc...etc
The sizes…poun…aada poun…etc
The charkha…The maanzaa…their lapetnaa…geti...ada geti!
The pench…either by deel… keench!
The screaming…khataa or safaa!

We use to do it in bigger gatherings...on roof top of any one of the friend’s house
With lot of masti and mazaa!
That includes playing songs… pungee bazanaa
It’s all use to be real fun for all the three days

Now days... residing in comparatively posh… modern/developed areas of the city
Our children can’t even imagine…the genre of games we use to play and the way we use to play!
Really I feel pity when they play games on play station or computers!

They don’t know the charm of the old city…where the real culture of the city dwells!
They don’t know staying in independent houses…that too in small basti areas…
Where every family…knows about other family…bit by bit!
They don’t know most of the childhood enjoyments of our time…
They live in closed doors of the multi store apartments…
Where even if one dies…the other goes to party!

Development of city…development of an individual is always good!

But now… when I see all my family members running in different directions…
As individuals…with different aims/ ambitions

I feel those were the golden days…when we were together as a family
Not only with reference to our house but also with reference to society!

Wow - straight from the heart post. Indeed, what you say is 100% true. I am in my late 20's now and i am glad to have been of the good old days you mention.
I have seen the transition from Doordarshan to DTH, CRT Computers to Ipads. If Lagori and Hide& Seek ruled outdoor games, Scrabble and Carrom- occupied the Noon Slots. Sincere Salute to the Pre- Playstation Era.
